United Nations Organization
The united nations is an international organization that was formed by fifty-one countries on 24 october 1945 in San Francisco (USA). After world war II, most counties felt the need for an institution that could mediate and resolve international conflict and wars through bilateral and multilateral negotiation and diplomatic dialogue. The United Nations has 193 counties as its members, and all of them have equal representation in the United Nation General Assembly.
The United Nations Charter
It has four main purposes:-
- Maintain worldwide peace and security.
- Foster good relation among countries.
- Encourage cooperation between nations in order to solve economic, social, cultural, humanitarian, and international issues.
- Provide a forum for bringing countries together to meet the UN’s purposes and goals for the betterment of the international community.
Organs of the United Nations.
There are six major organs of the United Nations:
It is the only organ in which all member nations are given the equal opportunity to be represented. It has six main committees, the Human Rights Council, the United Nations Secretariat, and additional bodies.
The role of the security council is to maintain international peace and security. The United States of America, the United Kingdom, Russia, France and China are permanent members with veto power.
The trusteeship council i`s called for the international supervision of eleven Non Self. Governing Territories administered by seven Member State. A trusteeship is a situation which one administers a Trust Territory.
Economic and Social Council
This council of the United nations helps the General Assembly to promote international economic and social cooperation and development. It has fifty four members
International Court of Justice
It is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations. The court settles legal disputes between nations in accordance with international law. It is presided over by fifteen judges elected for nine year terms.
It is made up of an international staff working at United Nations Headquarters in New York. It has offices in Geneva, Nairobi, and other locations. They carry out the day-to-day work of the organization.
